I received my Bachelor’s degree at Northwest Nazarene University… It was the place that I lost faith in Christians… I lost faith in Christ… I lost faith in God… A man… A professor… An idol of the school who authored Agape Love… I saw his vanity… But his power was held in the words of my advisor, “You can go to the Dean, but if you do… You may as well leave the school…” If one has the power over all then the all… The generalization… Is equal to the one…

I received my Master’s degree from the University of Denver… It was the place I lost faith in teachers… I lost faith in wisdom… I lost faith in trust… Dare I say to a client that she had the right to request another counselor… It was my naivety to trust ethics could hold more merit than the subjectivity of one professor… How is it that I would hear the same words from a different advisor…, “You can go to the Dean, but if you do… You may as well leave the school…” If one has the power over all then the all… The generalization… Is equal to the one…

I did my internship at a residential Adult Rehabilitation Center… It was the place I lost faith in counseling… I lost faith in care… One day the Chaplin… The man in charge… Informed me that we were going to discharge one of my clients because the client had been diagnosed with cancer and thus would not be able to work for his keep… It did not matter that the counselors and the residents cared for the man… It did not matter that the man’s cancer was not terminal and his work would only have to be slightly modified… It was only a matter of business and the subjectivity of the Chaplin in charge… If one has the power over all then the all… The generalization… Is equal to the one…

I worked for a research clinic… It was the place I lost faith in research… I lost faith in colleagues... I lost faith in my profession… To be commanded to alter data… To turn a blind eye… To be told that we are expendable in a pile of sixty other applications… To be called nutty for being the only one to make a stand… I stood alone… I am just a one… That does not equal… All…

We counsel our clients and encourage them not to generalize all for the actions of the few… The actions of the one… But is it a realistic concept… To not generalize… I often say that life is in perfect balance… There is 50 percent good and 50 percent bad… One could not be without the other… It is an irony however, that Mary often reminds me that I have to look for the good… I breathe a cynical chuckle as I think to myself… Why is it, that bad is so easily seen, but I have to look for good…? I see the air in the grass… The air in the trees… The air in the mountains… The air in the stars of where we could be… Why can I not see the air in people…?

Because we do nothing…, what is done by the one is accepted as being done by all… Thus… If one has the power over all then the all… The generalization… Is equal to the one…
