Navigating My Way Through the Practicum/Internship Process

By Saundra Burleson Unpublished

No one told me how stressful the search for a Practicum/Internship site was going to be!  Graduate school has been such a positive and rewarding experience...until now...!!

I have made at least 30 contacts (either by telephone or email) and have gotten from that only 5 interviews (either via Skype or telephone) and from those have gotten:

-  "We're sorry, we cannot abide by the recording requirements of you Internship program..."

-  "We're sorry, your school did not get the required documentation in by the required deadline, therefore we cannot consider you for internship..."

-  "We're sorry, at this time we do not have an available internship position in your area..."

So, I am still searching and have to have something in place before the end of May 2015.

I have always heard about these amazing internships and the awesome experiences that other graduate students have during their internship portion of their programs.  Where are those internships now?  Ok, so I'm not a "traditional" student!  I'm 51 years old and I am working full time as a Behavioral Health Technician.  I am fully willing to do whatever it takes to make an internship work.  I am an excellent student; I have excellent letters of recommendation; and I have been invited to be a member of the Chi Sigma Iota honor society; I am an active grad student member of my State counseling association and I am a member of several other divisions of ACA.  I am going to be an AWESOME counselor someday!  So why is it that I am struggling so much with this internship process?!
