My name is Dawn. I am a recent graduate and am in the process of getting established in the field as a tLMHC. While under supervision, I have discovered various unforeseen challenges with insurance companies and the recognition of the temporary Licensed Mental Health Counselor designation.
I am looking to share some frustrations with the current requirements for full licensure. I find the lack of recognition for the tLMHC licensure to be a barrier in providing much-needed counseling services. Although I appreciate and understand the need to ensure we are competent providers, I feel that meeting those requirements is extremely difficult due to the lack of licensure recognition by certain insurance companies. I feel that "incident to" billing is a step in the right direction but can't help but wonder why it is that tLMHC lacks professional recognition as opposed to other licensures.
Please share your thoughts to help me understand why it is the way it is.
