Dr. Harrichand is a Canadian of Chinese and East Indian ancestry who was born and raised in Guyana, South America. He is an Associate Professor of Counseling at Montclair State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (CACREP-Accredited) at Liberty University, holds a Master of Arts in Counselling from Providence Theological Seminary, and an Honors Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Integrative Biology from the University of Toronto at Scarborough.
Dr. Harrichand’s teaching interests include clinical mental health counseling issues, professional advocacy and counselor leadership development, and counseling theories and supervision. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (TX), a Licensed Professional Counselor with Supervisor designation (VA), a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Diagnostic privilege (NY), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). He has over 10 years of clinical experience working in community mental health and college/university counseling settings.
Dr. Harrichand is engaged in program review, advocacy, mentorship, teaching, and research. He frequently presents at local, state, regional, and national conferences in the areas of counselor professional advocacy, ethical practice, spirituality, multicultural counseling, and counselor wellness. He publishes in the areas of counselor education leadership and burnout, and gatekeeping and remediation practices for new faculty, LGBTQI+ issues in counseling, professional and social justice advocacy, specifically for immigrant and refugee populations, and international counseling students education and retention.
Dr. Harrichand is actively involved in professional service at the national and state levels. He served the American Counseling Association (ACA) completing a three-year term (2019-2022) as Co-Chair of the Professional Standards Committee. Dr. Harrichand currently serves the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) as President (2025-2026). He is a recipient of the Chi Sigma Iota Journal of Counselor Leadership and Advocacy Outstanding Article Award, the ACES Professional Leadership Award, the AMCD Young Emerging Leader Award, the AADA President’s Outstanding Service Award, the SACES Outstanding Pre-Tenured Counselor Educator Award, and the Texas Counseling Association Professional Writing Award.
