Creating a Platform for Mental Health Professionals

Throughout my training as a mental health counselor a trend that I had notice throughout my adult life started to become more prevalent, "the effects of unspoken societal and cultural norms and stigmas on the human psyche."  However, even more significantly I began realizing the many misconceptions individuals had about mental health and the need to educate individuals around the world about the importance of caring for their mental state.  In addition to the need to openly discuss topics that appear to go unnoticed but is so vital in contributing to the overwhelming lack of mental wellness.  As one who also has a degree in psychology I had always wondered what makes people act and respond as they do or even fail to advocate for their own benefit.  Now that I am working in the field of mental health I realize the answers to the many questions I had about people’s behaviors and ways of thinking or lack thereof.   I recently started a talk show that will air on Facebook watch in Fall 2019 call INTAKE.

The purpose of the show is to predominantly address unspoken societal and cultural norms and stigmas that effect the human psyche but also to provide a platform for mental health professionals and individuals who struggle with mental illnesses to discuss issues that most media outlets fail to discuss.  INTAKE Talk Show, I am hoping will not only educate people around the world about the importance of mental wellness but also destigmatize all of the negative perceptions associated with seeking out a mental health professional as well as the negative ideals of what it means to have a mental illness.  I encourage other mental health professionals to follow the show and to reach out to see how they can become involved with the mission of INTAKE and sharing their specialties and input on caring for one's mental health.  As an advocate for mental health and against domestic violence I believe it is so important to meet people where they are by utilizing one's knowledge to educate and empower individuals to seek the change they desire but importantly, to identify if change is needed.
